The title of this collection of 26 essays by senior colleagues reflects the wide-ranging research interests of its honoree Stephen A. Mitchell, and is organized in four parts, Myth and Legend; Magic and Folklore; Memory and Reception; and Influence and Interactions. The editors’ foreword opens with a sketch of Mitchell’s career, guiding interests of which have recently focused on memory studies, where he has made significant contributions as scholar and editor. While the foreword offers synopses of individual essays, some greater effort to elucidate the theoretical and methodological implications of the subsequent state-of-the-art essays would have been welcome.
